Established in 1998, the Sheldon Art Galleries are a not-for-profit art space with an ambitious exhibition program, showing artists of local, regional, national and international importance. The galleries have over 7,000 square feet of space in seven independent exhibit spaces devoted to a diverse range of changing exhibitions in galleries devoted to architecture, music and sound, photography, local and regional artists and collections, and children’s art. Selections from The Sheldon’s Hartenberger World Music Collection, a group of over 2,600 world musical instruments that span over 3,000 years of human history, are shown regularly in the Gallery of Music. In addition, a sculpture garden showcases both traditional and non-traditional sculpture and installation projects.

The Sheldon Art Galleries operate much like a museum by organizing exhibitions with works borrowed from galleries, museums and private collections. In addition to the over 15 free exhibitions that we mount yearly, we also offer education programs such as free gallery talks with exhibiting artists, poetry and music events, teacher training workshops, and master class workshops for young people with exhibiting artists, all of which support our mission to nurture a love and appreciation of the visual arts.

The Sheldon Art Galleries are located in an urban setting in the heart of a vibrant art, music and theatre district, next door to the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and the Contemporary Art Museum. Since the galleries are part of a larger complex that includes the historic and world-renowned Sheldon Concert Hall built in 1912, the galleries are also open during concerts and other events.

Gallery Mission:
The mission of the Sheldon Art Galleries is to promote the appreciation of the visual arts by presenting high-quality and diverse exhibitions in an intimate setting; to present a broad range of genres that inspire discovery, learning and wonder which engage the St. Louis community and beyond with changing exhibitions and programs; and to support the Sheldon Arts Foundation’s mission by fostering both music and the visual arts.
